Born in Boston in 1952 and raised mostly in peacetime New York City, it’s hard to imagine that the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961, or a military coup in Greece in 1967, or Mao’s communist takeover of China in 1949, would alter the course of my life.  But they did and still do.
